This 1960 Steinway Model S is one of the rarest instruments we have ever had the privilege of restoring. It is a genuine Hamburg Steinway, built at Steinway's legendary factory in Hamburg, Germany, and Hamburg no longer manufactures the Model S. That means this piano cannot be replicated, replaced, or ordered new at any price. It is, in every sense of the word, a one-of-a-kind instrument. While most Steinways sold in the United States are built in New York, Hamburg instruments are celebrated worldwide by the most discerning pianists for their distinctly refined, nuanced, and deeply expressive European tonal character. Our craftsmen are currently performing a comprehensive, uncompromising restoration to ensure this extraordinary instrument performs at the absolute highest level for decades to come. Because the original soundboard remains in great condition with only one very minor crack, we are carefully repairing, shimming, and preserving it. To ensure the piano performs at the absolute highest level, we are performing a full mechanical rebuild. This includes a completely new action (new hammers, shanks, flanges, wippens, and back checks), a new pin block, new strings, and a rebronzed harp. The original ivory keys, which were worn, are being replaced with premium new keytops for a flawless touch. Visually, the cabinet's original polyester finish was heavily worn, so it is being completely stripped and beautifully refinished. All brass hardware is also being polished to a brilliant shine.
